Week 12

Writer: Gabriella GomesGabriella Gomes

Midterms are one of the most stressful parts of a college student’s summer. Part-time jobs and internships take up time, but studying for midterms takes up most of the week.

I was not prepared for how busy I would be during finals.

Oh my goodness, I am asking why I did this to myself during my final summer as a college student. However, my answer remains the same: because I want to finish strong.

However, this has taken a toll on my internship duties this week. I have not opened a file, let alone done an examination of a transcript, in about a week.

Thankfully, my project leads are understanding, and are going to be attending the internship showcase on the 4th of August to see what I came up with!

The environment that I had experienced within the internship had been nothing short of amazing. The supportive atmosphere and the feeling of security allowed me to make mistakes.

Now, I say “allow” for a reason. The leads have created a way for me to be able to explore new pathways in making the internship more effective for those who come after me. However, that comes with caveats. For example, missing files are a very common occurrence when it comes to creating a set area for a certain candidate. Release forms are mixed up, and it may create confusion. Part of my duties is ensuring that each of these files is in the correct place at the correct time. However, as with most things, that doesn’t always go to plan. Therefore, some of our participants had been labeled as “missing _____” when the required document was somewhere within the batch, just not in the correct folder.

As I was exploring more files, I had realized this wasn’t necessarily a common occurrence, but something that did indeed happen, and something that I was able to amend.

Now, though, I am able to reflect on those mistakes. More importantly, I am able to suggest a newer system of uploading that would be more indicative to our time. This method: ensure the students who are submitting the files are labeling them using a universal labelling system to avoid confusion. It is my understanding that these files and interviews were conducted during the semester by Dr. Cassanello or Dr. Bubriski, and then transcribed by their students. If the students were to label them with the exact same format, then submit them to the class page, it would be much easier to organize.

With that, my internship comes to a close. I was very thankful for the experiences that I was able to have, and the University of Central Florida staff I was able to learn a bit more about.

To those who wish to start an internship through the UCF program, I highly recommend to do so as soon as possible. The connections you make and the skills you learn WILL help you throughout your undergraduate, and in your career.

With that, I say thank you, and good night.
